Naches Trail, part of the Oregon Trail ended here

Oregon Trail marker at Broodale Golf Course
In front of the golf course parking lot along Brookdale Road and a bit hidden in the bushes is an official Oregon Trail marker. In the aerial photo there is a pathway that is said to be the actual ruts left by the wagons coming to the Mahon residence there.

Hidden in the middle of the Brookdale Golf Course is a bit of history. In 1853, settlers began arriving over the Naches Trail. There is an interesting story of how they were unable to get the wagons downt he hill from the top of the pass near Greenwater. There is also a marker in greenwater on SR410. There are markers on the 72 Road (about 5 miles from the highway) near the parking lot for the horses. There is also a marker on 70th Avenue close to 160th Street where the Naches Trail passed through South Hill Puyallup. Our new Naches Trail Park on Old Military Road, just below Clover Creek Elementary, was dedicated as a place close to where the settlers camped. The trail crossed Old Military Road about where the creek crosses currently and the settlers camped on the west side of the creek under the protection of the nearby hillside. That hillside area was also the location of a homeless camp during the Great Depression.

The Mahon family was said to be very hospitable to the newly arriving settlers, providing them food and a place to stay as they searched for their new homesteads in Pierce County. The Mahon family homesite is also visible in a circle of trees above the orange arrow. The golf course is on part of the Christopher Mahon Donation Land Claim. This Naches Trail site is officially onsidered the end of the northern most branch of the Oregon Trail.
