Roy Pioneer Rodeo Saturday & Sunday

This weekend, September 1st and 2nd,  is the Roy Pioneer Rodeo and preparations are underway on the rodeo grounds. The area is being dozed, the announcer booth cleaned and set up and the onions are being peeled.

Onions? Yes, the Roy Pioneer Rodeo Association runs the concessions stand and is known for their fried onions. It’s one of those local, well kept secrets. Of course they’ll have the usual staples that any concession stand would carry. The Erb family has been participating in the rodeo for several generations. Three generations were helping set up today. Grandson Will Johnson was eager to help, even if it did take an ice cream cone for encouragement.

There has been some controversy over where the visitors to the rodeo will camp. Burlington Northern owns the land between the town hall and the railroad tracks and has asked the police to enforce their private property rights on the land. That means no camping and no vendors on the site. In past years there has been a lot of activity there, resulting in extra liability for the land owner.

The Roy Tavern has the fencing all set up for their outdoor beer garden. The weatherman says the weather is going to be sunny and dry. Perfect weather and the town of Roy is ready for you to come visit.

Admission to the Roy Pioneer Rodeo is $10 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 for kids (6-12). If you have a child 5 and under, they’re free. Well, at least until they hear there’s ice cream at the concession stand.

Grab your boots and hat and join in the party at the ropin’, ridin’ and bulldoggin’-est fun weekend event in Roy. It‘s only 7 miles south of Spanaway on SR507.
