The Women of Color Health Awareness Committee of Pierce County will host the: 8th Annual Women of Color Health Conference; honoring the First Lady of Health; Michelle Obama on September 8th, 2012, 8: am to 3:00 pm, Bethlehem Baptist Church; Family Life Center, 4818 Portland Ave, Tacoma WA 98404.
The event is sponsored by Bethlehem Baptist Church Health Ministry, The US Dept. Of Health & Human Services (HHS), Office on Women’s Health Region X, to promote Healthy Lifestyles for Older Women, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Franciscan Health System, MultiCare, South Sound Outreach, The Hope Heart Institute, Regence BlueShield of WA., Goodwill Industries, Molina Health Care South Sound Outreach, Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA), Gardine and WalkLive for Live.
“Mrs Obama’s national outreach program, Let’s Move! addressing childhood obesity was the catalyst which led our committee to choose the theme: “First Lady of Health.” Women are the “First Ladies” in their households and primarily responsible for their family’s nutrition promotion of a healthy lifestyle.
With the focus on health lifestyles, the day will kick off at 8:30 with a continental breakfast and a personal health assessment and goal setting activity. Attendees will find something that will captivate their interest; as the event has a host of venues.

Activities include: Dynamic presentations by local health care specialist that provide education, motivation and empowerment for women, girls, and men attendees. Cholesterol, diabetes and blood pressure screenings, an interactive cooking demonstration and physical activity breaks. There are topics for women of all ages, with a special selected topics of to promote healthy lifestyles for older women such as living well with chronic disease management, education such as; diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and stroke; as these are the leading chronic diseases and cause of death for women of color. The Tacoma Dental Village will be on site as well to provide free dental cleanings provided to children. A community Farmers Market will be on-site, as well as: informational exhibits and retail vendors.
This exciting free event includes the 8th Annual Susan G. Komen sponsored Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon. This year our luncheon keynote speaker is one of Tacoma’s finest Breast Surgeons: Dr. Lynne Clark. This is the time when cancer survivors are honored and celebrated.
Further, representatives from the Milgard Breast Center will be available to educate and demonstrate how to perform: Self Breast examinations (SBEs) .Through SBEs, many women have found their own tumors; leading to early diagnosis and treatment with favorable outcomes
