Each week, the Bethel School District Athletic Director sends out an “Athletic Highlights for the Week” recap. This week, I found an unusual surprise at the bottom. The list shows what must have been a disappointing week for many kids who know they have to train and work a bit harder now.

For September 10-15, the teams listed below without any explanation, lost their games. And then, at the very bottom of the list there is a story. That story is about two Spanaway Lake teams, the girls in volleyball and the boys varsity football team. Yes, I said Spanaway Lake. I am pleased to say, they are having success this year and I will also say there is credit to be given to the coaching staff as well as the students.

The purpose of telling you is to make you look. You just might want to follow these two teams from Spanaway Lake. It may not have been something you thought about based on past years, but now, it’s time to pay attention. Go out and watch a Spanaway Lake High School football or volleyball game. And if you are at The Fair on Saturday, stop in to see the SLHS Music Company perform at 3:45 p.m. on the Showplace Stage. There is something going on at SLHS this year and you ought to see it.

Volleyball – Defeated Kentlake as Alicia Ortiz had 10 kills, 7 aces and 17 digs while Brittany Brooks had 11 digs and Seirra Hoover had 29 assists.

Football – Defeated Beamer as Treyvon Brown rushed for 239 yards and 2 TD’s while Kyle Pickering rushed for 112 yards and Logan Stenger kicked a 32‐yard field goal.
