While most students headed home on the first Thursday of the school year to enjoy a 4-day weekend, twenty-two first-year cadets stayed at Washington High School to participate in the New Cadet Orientation Program (NCOP). Organized and run by returning cadets, the overnight program—now in its third year—was developed to help new cadets integrate into the squadron and enhance teamwork at an accelerated pace. Events during the 18-hour long program included team building exercises, staff and competitive team briefings, marching, uniform issue and physical training. Many cadets also got their first taste of an MRE (Meal Ready to Eat), but the highlight of the event was the breakfast of pancakes, yogurt, cereal and doughnuts provided by the Booster Club.
