BETHEL SCHOOL DISTRICT — Starting this month, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, in cooperation with the Bethel School District, will conduct a series of K-9 sweeps. The district has no tolerance for drugs in schools and the sweeps are a proactive way to prevent narcotics on school grounds.
The K-9 sweeps will be introduced to the school environment in a way that is educational, respectful of student rights, nonintrusive and not disruptive to the educational process. These sweeps are legal and highly monitored. Students will not be targeted or sniffed by the K-9.
Canine assisted narcotics sweeps do not indicate that a particular school has an abnormal amount of drugs on campus. Instead, they demonstrate the willingness of school officials to be proactive in their efforts to ensure the safety and security of the school.
If you or your student has information about drugs being sold, used or possessed at school we encourage you to report this to your school Principal immediately.

It is horrible that we have gotten to a point that press releases from school districts have to use wording like “abnormal amount of drugs on campus” indicating to me there is a normal amount or acceptable amount. I don’t remember that when I was in school twenty years ago and fear for my children as they get older. I’m happy to see schools be proactive.
