JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment is scheduled to dedicate a new memorial Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m.
The ceremony, hosted by Lt. Col. Greg Anderson, battalion commander of 2d Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment, will dedicate the new memorial to all fallen Rangers of 2d Battalion – past, present and for future generations to come.
The new memorial is simple, yet symbolic and rich with history; and includes four symbols that represent Rangers, past, present, and future:
The 2nd Battalion Scroll…the patch worn by all modern day Rangers, coveted by all that wear it and have earned the right to wear it on their right sleeve for service in combat.
The Orange Diamond 2…is the iconic symbol of the World War II generation of Rangers who stormed the cliffs of Pointe Du Hoc and led the way off Omaha Beach during the D-Day Invasion. The men who wore this symbol left the Rangers that followed a legacy we must fight to preserve and protect.
The Dagger…a Fairburn Sykes fighting knife, founded in the UK in 1941 was carried by the British Commandos, the Office of Strategic Service and the Rangers. This knife, and variations of it including the V-42 Stiletto, remains an essential tool carried by generations of Rangers since World War II.
The Obelisk…carved out of a single block of Galaxy Granite that bears the names of our Fallen Rangers. Placed now at the tip of the spear, it holds the position of honor… centered in the Battalion formation area. When the Battalion is formed, their fallen will forever be with them.
Work began on the memorial in March 2012.
