Local business people captivated by aquatic center presentation

Bethel Aq Center 1Thursday morning, Dr Rob Van Slyke spoke to the 723 Networking group with a Power Point presentation on the conceptual Bethel Aquatic Learning and Wellness Center. It is conceptual because although a feasibility study has been conducted and drawings have been created, the school board has not yet approved going forward with the project.
The 723 Networking group would like to change that. They have been attending and speaking at board meetings in favor of the complex. They were captivated with the presentation which included potential floor plans and elevations.

According to Van Slyke, the biggest concern of the school board is that going forward will not mean having to give up any general operating funds meant for the classroom to maintain the pool facility. In addition to being in charge of construction in the district, Van Slyke has significant experience operating swimming pool facilities in other districts. He has coached swimming teams and was a chemistry teacher. He already has a good idea of operating, maintaining and what it takes to break even with a swimming facility. Bethel Aq Center 2

“Run it like a business and it will be successful,” he told the audience. “This will be a significant facility that will support the needs of our community.”

Here are some of the feature Van Slyke envisions in the potential facility:

• 50 Meter Competition & Instruction Pool
• 42 x 42 ft Diving, Fitness, Instruction Pool
• 30 x 40 ft Warm Water Therapy/Rehab Pool
• 30 x 36 ft Warm Water Therapy/Rehab Pool
• 230 Lineal Foot “Lazy River”
• 2 Water Slides
• 12 x 12 ft Soaking/Therapy Pool
• 40 ft diameter Splash/Play Pool
• Seating for ~1000 spectators
• Sauna & Steam Rooms
• Concessions
• Two Classrooms
• Game Room
• 62,000 Square Feet Total

In a few weeks, this idea may be drawn up as a proposal to the board. Bethel Aq Center 3There is still some skepticism and those who really want to have a great facility for this community need to go out and speak up during the public comment portion of the board meetings.
It is likely that the board will partner with another organization to operate the pool. Discussions have been held with the YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs and others.
“This is not  your average high school pool,” Van Slyke added. “There isn’t anything like this in the county.” He noted it will probably attract an audience from a far as 30 miles away.
The aquatic facility will be located on 38th Avenue East across from the Bethel Middle School.
Rober Van Slyke is available to show his PowerPoint presentation and discuss the aquatic facility with local organizatons. You can reach him through the Bethel District Office, 253-683-6000.
