Local crafts and produce to be featured at Bethel Community Open Market

A committee of local community supporters has been meeting for several months at the new Bethel Learning Center to discuss hosting a Bethel Community Open Market (Farmer’s Market, plus).

Historically, the area known as “Elk Plain”  was a great, grassy prairie where the herds of antlered animals came to graze. This area encompassed the Spanaway, Frederickson and Graham communities. When the railroad arrived, they named whistle stops at Loveland, Harding, Kirby and Frederickson. The trolly served Spanaway. The area became well known for its agricultural products up until the housing boom that began in the 1960’s. There are still many farms and many people creating home-made crafts that are often seen at local fairs. This ambitious new group is planning to use the new Bethel Learning Center facility to site the market. Three Saturday dates have been chosen for the 2013 events.

May 11
August 10
November 9

If you wish to be involved in the planning, they meet at the Bethel Learning Center every Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. The group is particularly interested in locally made crafts, produce and products. (Don’t plan on participating if you are selling something made in a foreign country.)
