PIERCE COUNTY LIBRARY —  Celebrate National Volunteer Week April 21-27  Next week, April 21-27, marks National Volunteer Week. Thank you to all volunteers who give their time and talents to Pierce County Library System and the communities we serve. In 2012, a total of 211 adult and teen volunteers gave 5,941 hours of service. We are giving each volunteer a certificate of acknowledgement and thanks and highlighting the Top Ten Volunteers who gave the highest number of hours in 2012. Congratulations to Pierce County Library’s Mover & Shaker Librarian
Library Journal named Susan Anderson-Newham a Mover & Shaker, for her innovation, creativity, and contributions to make a difference in people’s lives. The Early Learning Supervising Librarian develops and implements early learning classes and materials for parents and child care providers. Pierce County Library is a leader in early literacy and learning in Washington State, and Susan’s ingenuity and dedication has led the way. Library Journal is a trade publication for librarians worldwide. Library Journal editors and writers recognized 50 emerging leaders from around the globe from a field of more than 600 applications for the award.

Pierce County READS Events
You are invited to participate in free Pierce County READS events: art deco jewelry craft in partnership with Tacoma Art Museum, French cheese tasting, movie based on a Hemingway novel, book discussion, travel to Paris, writing and publishing books, and antique auctions and collectors. The events focus on themes from the selected Pierce County READS 2013 best-selling book, “The Paris Wife” by internationally acclaimed author Paula McLain.

Clubs for Tweens, Ages 9-12
Tweens here’s your chance to talk about books with others your age at Book Clubs: Lakewood Pierce County Library, Wednesday, April 24, 6 p.m. and Orting Pierce County Library, Thursday, April 25, 3:30 p.m.
For Tweens interested in learning and improving your chess game check out the Chess Club: Grades K-8 learn and play at Gig Harbor Pierce County Library, Thursdays, 6 p.m.

Preparing for College @ Parkland Spanaway Pierce County Library
If college is on your horizon learn how to Ace the SAT: Gain a basic understanding of the SAT test and simple strategies that will help make the college entrance test less intimidating. Wednesday, April 17, 7 – 8:30 p.m.
Also, for students and parents learn how to apply for college at a free class—What Does It Take? For Parents and Students: Understand admission requirements for Washington State colleges and universities. Tuesday, April 23, 7 – 8:30 p.m.

Opera Preview
If you like opera or what to find out if you do hear from Seattle’s opera expert Norm Hollingshead during an entertaining and enthusiastic free preview of the Seattle Opera productions: “La Voix Humaine” by Francis Poulenc and “Suor Angelica” by Giacomo Puccini.
