Washington High School Cadet Earns Air Force ROTC Scholarship

on

Washington High School senior Jacob San Agustin recently received notification that he has been selected for a Type-7 Air Force ROTC scholarship. The Type-7 scholarship pays for four years of tuition to any public college or university in the United States. Besides tuition, it also covers $900 annually for books and provides a monthly stipend starting at $250 for freshmen. Because Jacob is planning on attending the University of Portland—a private school—he is going to convert his scholarship into a 3-year Type-2, which will pay him $18,000 per year starting his sophomore year. This will still include the annual $900 award for books and the monthly stipend, although his will start at $300 his sophomore year.

In order to apply for this scholarship, Jacob had to have a 3.0 GPA at the end of his junior year of high school and an ACT score of 24 or an SAT score of 1100. He also had to take a physical fitness test, complete a survey of extracurricular activities, and submit a resume.

While he easily met all of the academic requirements, Jacob also has an impressive list of extracurricular activities, including the current JROTC squadron commander, being one of two Washington State Boys Nation representatives, and a varsity football letterman for both Washington HS and Lakenheath HS—a Department of Defense school in England.
