At the May 28 Bethel School Board meeting, Bethel High School teacher Jim Sawatzki shared an overview of the Washington State History Day Competition in which the BHS team won the state championship.

The board voted to authorize the administration to begin preparations for the following programs to begin for School Year 2014-15 (or as feasible), contingent upon successful M & O levy passage in February 2014: (1) Spanish language immersion, grades K through 5, a magnet school with transportation provided; (2) Cambridge, an internationally recognized high school curriculum; and, (3) Elk Plain School of the Arts, grades K through 8, a magnet school with transportation provided.

Superintendent Tom Seigel introduced  David Hammond, newly appointed Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Schools. (Curtis High School principal).

The retiring Director of Athletics and Security, Dan Heltsey received an award from Superintendent Seigel.

Tom Cruver, currently the Bethel Education Association President is retiring and received a Superintendent’s Superior Service Award.

They awarded the bid for construction of the Rocky Ridge Elementary Improvement project to Schwiesow Construction of Centralia, WA in the amount of $197,100.00, and approve the construction contingency of $33,621.32, including sales tax.

Authorized the purchase of additional property for future expansion of the District’s Transportation and Warehouse operations. The property located at 5715 192nd St E, Puyallup, WA (Pierce County Assessor Parcel No. 0419313052) adjoins the future Transportation/Central Kitchen site on its easterly property boundary. The site is 8 acres and would accommodate expanded operations.

The board also discussed, but did not make any decision on the expiring Maintenance and Operation Levy, which is now approximately 30% of the district’s operating budget. It will most likely be on the ballot in February 2014. They are also considering a levy for technology and a bond to expand the recreational facilities around Art Crate Field for the use of the district and community needs.
