County Council delays action on changing election years for county officials

on

With Council members Fleming and Ladenburg absent, the Pierce County Council continued Ordinance 2013-42 to July 30. In an earlier committee meeting, Council member Talbert had voted no on the  action. In order to pass an ordinance that will make a Charter amendment, the Council must have 5 votes to pass. It was likely they only had 4 Council members present that would support it. On July 30, all the Council members should be present to discuss and vote on the measure.

Since the ordinance was continued, there was no discussion at this meeting ont he topic. Council Chair, Joyce McDonald allowed Ann Dasch to speak about the measure in the general comments at the end of the meeting. Dasch stated she was unavailable for the next meeting and wished to state her reservations on the measure and that she felt having the council rather than the Charter Review Commission present this measure to the public, “Did not pass the smell test.” This ordinance was proposed by Council member Richardson who was opposed by Dasch in the last election. Dasch noted that being a relative unknown in the election, her candidacy was helped by having several up ticket candidates to support her. In an odd year election she felt the lower turnout generally was helpful only to incumbents.

Stay turned for news from next week’s hearing.
