The Parkland Spanaway Kiwanis had a work party on Wednesday, August 14 and worked with several volunteers who brought lawnmowers, rakes, trimmers, shears and other assorted equipment for the task.
Members of the 723 Networking Group, Bob Benum and his wife, Carolyn Bennett also assisted. Benum’s grandparents and an uncles rest in the cemetery.
The Old Spanaway Cemetery is at 176th and A Street. It was purchased by Fir Lane Memorial Park. There was both a Protestant and a Catholic side to the cemetery which were previously maintained separately. They are now going to be maintained together. There are many long time local families interred there. Pick up a copy of the book, Early Spanaway at the Fir Lane office, read it, then stroll through the Old Spanaway cemetery. You’ll know a lot more about your community.
