SPANAWAY, WA — There was excitement, noise, food, sunshine and the smell of fuel in the air at Spanaway Park this Sunday. The announcers, Jeff Ayler and Brad Luce called the races adding excitement and exhilaration to the heats. They have worked together 4 or 5 years and have called about 9 races together, since meeting at the 2007 Gold Cup in Detroit.
Early in the day the judges informed us there was a change in a race outcome from Saturday. The inspectors look at over the winning boats after the race. In the NM race the #6 boat with driver-Kevin Eacret, there was an issue with the fuel so the first place went to # 90 driven by Karen Toulouce. This was the 293rd race for #90 and it is retiring now. Owner, Pat Bertram of Eatonville (Class of ’54) said he will be selling it to a person who plans to place it in a museum.
Today was also the Neal Yappachino Memorial Regatta, an award that has been given since 1981. The winner this year was Marc Halvorsen.
From Spanaway, NumNum of Team Toothpick Racing could not race their board today due to fiberglass peeling on the bottom. So they set it up outside the pits and let people climb into it for fun. The name toothpick came from an accident one of the team members had before they started racing the inboards, they were racing the radio control boats and accidentally turned off the radio, but not the engine. The boat smashed into the wall at the Spanaway Lake boathouse going full speed.
There is no shortage of interesting stories among this group of inboard racers.
