SPANAWAY, WA — The following are items that were part of the September 10 Bethel School Board meeting.
A team of health and fitness specialists shared the newly developed Brain Breaks packets. There is a correlation between physically fit students and academic achievement. These activity breaks may be used at the beginning of class to energize the students, in the middle of class to break up the workload, or at the end of class as a review.
Spanaway Lake High Choir Director Barney Crouse was honored for a statewide award, Choral Director of the Year, he received this summer at the Washington State American Choral Directors Association.
During public comment, Nel Batker spoke of her opposition to the board spending funds on an aquatic center. She also stated her willingness to vote for a levy which she said spends money on student education.

The meeting ended with the architects from Erickson McGovern discussing the design work, planning and project estimates for Elk Plain School of Choice.
The 2006 voter-approved bond provided money to purchase property, reconfigure the bus drop-off area, student drop-off area, and parking situation. Additionally, the bond provided money for a new roof on the main building and some limited additions to the multi-purpose room and kitchen. Since the 2006 bond was passed, a plan to develop Elk Plain into a K-8 school of choice has been devised. The associated alterations are now part of the construction planning process for work scheduled to be complete by the start of school in 2014.
