Worksource Centers seeing furloughed Federal employees

EMPLOYMENT SECURITY — A lot of federal workers are showing up at WorkSource centers looking for information about unemployment benefits.  They need to be aware that there are no “unemployment offices” in Washington.WorkSource staff provide employment and retraining services; they do not process unemployment claims and don’t have the expertise to answer questions about unemployment benefits.

All applications and weekly claims must be submitted online or by phone – and all questions must be addressed to claims agents through our website or by phone (800-318-6022). If furloughed workers don’t have access to Internet or phone at home, they may use these resources for free at WorkSource.

Deadlines:  Furloughed workers have through Saturday to file an initial application for unemployment benefits in order to count this first week as their wait week. If they miss the deadline, Employment Security will have to back-date each claim by hand, which will delay their claims.
