Roy lights their tree and warms hearts

ROY, WA — It was a heartwarming Christmas Tree Lighting celebration at the Roy Community Center December 6. There was a large chocolate cake, coffee and punch, teddy bears for the children and a visit from Santa himself.

In the background, Lori Haun played carols on the mellophonium, a kind of French horn for ambiance. members of the Triple Nickel, the 555th Engineering Brigade from JBLM were present, including their new commander.DSC_2467

Just to the right as people came in the door was a wooden box to take donations on behalf of the Green family. The father, Steven Green was the worker who was trapped and died in the Feed Mill accident this week in Roy. A special prayer was offered in the Community Center for the family in memory of Steve Green.

On exiting the building, people picked up candles for a candlelight vigil while singing several carols beside the unlit tree. Then, after a chorus of O Christmas Tree, the tree lit up. In the middle of it was a large, silver star. The City of Roy put it there in honor of Mr. Green.

And in amongst the crowd, there was a family present, but low-key. They were not introduced. They did not rise to speak. But it is certain, they felt the love of their small town.

Donations to assist the Green family can be made at any Key bank branch. Ask for the Donation account for Steven Green.
