BETHEL SCHOOL DISTRICT — For the eleventh year in a row, students from across the district competed in the Middle School Battle of the Books. This year the event took place at the newly remodeled commons at Bethel Middle School.
Battle of the Books is a fun, academic based competition. The program is designed to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading. It broadens their reading interests, increases comprehension and promotes academic excellence. Battle of the Books encourages students to read a variety of books and remember information about plots, characters, settings and themes. Students must choose to read a minimum of five books from a list of thirteen pre-selected books (one biography, two non-fiction, a Newberry Medal winner, and titles nominated for the 2014 Evergreen Young Adult Book Award or the Young Reader’s Choice Award). Students discuss the books, quiz each other on the contents and then compete in teams to correctly answer questions based on the books in a quiz show format.
Students at each middle school competed at the school level and the winning teams moved on to the district competition. For the second year in a row, Frontier Middle School’s team came out on top, answering 24 out of 25 questions correctly. This win ties Frontier with Cedarcrest Middle School for the most Battle of the Books wins in the district.
