Subject: Depave Information

Here is some information to include in the call for potential Depave sites:

I am contacting you about the possibility of bringing a sustainability project that I am working on to the Chambers-Clover watershed. Specifically, I am looking for a site to do a “DePave” project (see http://www.depave.org for some background on what this program is all about) and it seems like the C3 Watershed Council might be an ideal partner. The whole idea behind DePaving is to remove unnecessary pavement from our communities and replace it with community green spaces such as rain gardens or community gardens. By removing pavement and creating green space, a property owner can dramatically reduce their environmental footprint, especially in the department of stormwater runoff pollution (far and away Puget Sound’s single largest pollution threat). We are seeking high quality projects that we can share with funders to receive grant funding for future projects as we hope to keep the cost at low or no cost to the community group and property owner. Additionally, the DePave and follow-up open space creation will be conducted as a community event that engages and educates all-comers in good land stewardship practices and can also generate some positive press.

A DePave project can be tailored to fit the needs of the site; as you can see on the website no two projects look alike. The basic parameters we are looking for are:

  • DePave 1,000-5,000 sqft
  • Replace impervious area with community green space, such as native planting and/or rain garden
  • Community support of the conversion, ensuring volunteer support during the Depave and ongoing maintenance needs of the site
  • Property owner willing to host the DePave demonstration and allow for future site visits by the community

Please let me know if you think there might be a good fit here. It would be a very cool and uplifting partnership to work together on this.

Thanks,

Melissa
