Journalism is not a safe, secure job. Journalism is often asking hard questions, interviewing unsavory people, or world leaders. Journalism is about telling the stories, good, bad, ugly, or joyous. It requires access to people, information and historical records. It requires freedom of speech in its best forms.
This past year, may journalists have died in conflicts around the world. Some are imprisoned in hostile countries. May 3 is designed as World Press Freedom Day in honor of those who serve the cause of getting the story out.
Words from President Biden’s Press Release today, “Journalists go to great lengths to expose corruption, document wars and other urgent world events, bring to light threats to public safety, and bring citizens the information they need to participate fully in their societies. Some journalists have given their lives to this work. Others have suffered grievous injuries or lost their freedom.”
Here’s to those who deliver the news, under any conditions.
