PIERCE COUNTY — In an effort to make services more accessible to all community members, Pierce County Planning & Public Works is piloting the use of handheld translation devices in the Development Center Lobby.
The new devices support in-person communication in more than 200 languages and dialects, helping reduce language barriers during permitting and development-related interactions. The pilot program is part of a broader initiative to improve customer service and ensure equitable access for all residents.
Our goal is to serve people in the language they feel most comfortable using. These devices allow us to offer fast, secure, and accurate translations during in-person visits.
Using the devices is simple: customers select their language and dialect, speak into the device, and the staff member receives an instant translation. The technology supports two-way conversations, helping customers and staff communicate clearly in real time.
The devices also include features that may support future use, such as QR codes that allow customers to connect with staff remotely or receive live translations via your phone during presentations.
Translation devices are currently available in the Development Center Lobby at the Pierce County Annex. Need help in your language? Just ask a lobby staff member. We are happy to help you use the device.
