August 19 County Council meeting at Frederickson – Opinion

By Marianne Lincoln, editor

Tuesday, August 19, 6:00 pm, is an in-district County Council meeting in Frederickson at the Pierce County Public Works Central Maintenance Facility – Elk Plain Meeting Room 4812 196th St. E. Spanaway, Washington. Agenda here.

Here is a historical article about Frederickson from CM Amy Cruver. Also, here is an updated census report she provided. The meeting’s theme is about the value of Frederickson as a manufacturing/industrial center and its connection to the Port of Tacoma.

As the daughter of a Frederickson President of the 1980’s, I will inject a bit more, I doorbelled several big Frederickson businesses for sponsorship of local non-profit group projects. It was a futile effort. None were responsive. If they are so valuable, maybe they should give a little flying fart about the community they dominate and drive those big trucks all over trashing our road surfaces, include the ones that have load limits. Maybe they could encourage their employees to participate in or donate to the Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, or other local charity.

When the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce had a South County Chapter, several Frederickson businesses were participants. In the past 10 years, that has changed. It is as if we do not exist around them.

They have built warehouses over our creek headwaters and seasonal streams calling it runoff. Clover Creek is going dry earlier in the year than ever. The prairie land is covered in concrete and asphalt. The huge warehouses have few jobs compared to the space they consume. Please explain to me where that is a benefit?

Please attend. Ask when Frederickson’s mega businesses are going to actually be part of our community or just use us up. Who actually see that money they supposedly contribute?

I commented on Fred310 when it was proposed. Hardly anyone knew it was coming. We need to let more people know so they can express how this is working for them in their neighborhoods. We need better public notice on these impacting projects. They sure have an easier time getting large roadways and sidewalks than we do getting sidewalks for our kids safety.

See you there.
