March 16 roadside spraying and maintenance begins

There is an “Owner Will Maintain” program in Pierce County for those who do not want the County contractors to come by and cut or spray the roadside where they live. If you do not have these two signs placed at the edges of your property, spraying could happen anytime between March 16 and May. If you want to get signs, visit the County Road Shop, 4812 196th St. E, Spanaway, WA 98387. 253-798-6000, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and sign the agreement to maintain your property.

The “Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management Program” includes the use of herbicides to combat weeds and eliminate vegetation from road shoulders. In 2026, these applications will be made March 16 through May.

Targeted noxious weed and brush control herbicide applications are also made through late November as needed. Only federal- and state-approved herbicides are used.

Crews also mow grass in the spring and summer and cut brush and trim trees as needed throughout the year.

This annual maintenance work reduces fire danger, optimizes stormwater drainage, helps control noxious weeds and non-native plants, and promotes native plant growth.
