Starting February 25, 2026, the federal government put a six-month moratorium on the purchase of durable medical equipment. The moratorium applies to medical supply companies whose principal function is to furnish DMEPOS supplies directly to beneficiaries, medical providers, or both. It does not apply to entities whose primary function is not DMEPOS provision, such as pharmacies, hospitals, grocery stores, home health agencies, or individual practitioners.
The government says this is temporary and they are trying to combat fraud. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a six-month nationwide moratorium on February 25, 2026, effective upon Federal Register publication on February 27, 2026. This moratorium temporarily halts the enrollment of new Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) medical supply companies into the Medicare program. It is a program integrity measure designed to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse (FWA) in areas where CMS has identified significant vulnerabilities.
