Redistricting Pierce County

By Marianne Lincoln

They slipped this meeting under the radar on me. I looked at the redistricting page on the link I Googled and there was no meeting dates. But, lo and behold, the scrolling pictures on the Pierce County Council page has a different redistricting link.

Here is the Redistricting link for meetings.

September 20, 2021 this is the link to the meeting video.

September 28, 2021, 5:30 p.m. continues the night of this article’s writing. This meeting should elect the 5th member so the work on boundaries can begin.

Current committee members
• Sharon Hanek
• Justin Leighton
• Douglas G. Richardson
• Joy Stanford

September 29, 2021 is also a meeting continuation if the 5th member is not elected on the 28th.

This link is to notes of how the meeting were conducted in 2011. It may be a personal blog Mr. Leighton, but it was not skewed with a bunch of opinion, just what was said.

[Editor note: Best of luck to the new committee. I see you are already asking how it was done last time and working in the dark. Yes, that is fairly normal.]

[Additional Editor’s note: Editor testified at the meeting to let the committee know Editor took contemporaneous notes at the 2011 meetings and put them in a blog along with meeting agendas. County Minutes were not added, as they were lacking information compared to notes taken by Editor.
Member Leighton mentioned Editor by name in his comments made after the public comment and telling County Staff to get the Committee records from the 2011 meetings. In the process of those comments, Member Leighton slighted the notes taken by Editor as opinion, which they were not. The 2011 blog did include much comment which would have showed Member opinion, but Editor went to some effort not to include her own. Editor was a bit ruffled by the remark, there was considerable time it took to attend each meeting and create all the notes, plus travel on personal time and personal expense for public benefit. At the October 5 meeting, many comments made by Member Leighton were spot on, and Editor considered it sounded as if he had read some of her notes. That was indeed the case as he later wrote directly to Editor. What he doesn’t know is Editor cheered him as he made those knowledgeable remarks in the next meeting.]

  1. Thank you. I’m concerned about what this might do to our D’s votes! Carol

It can throw everything sideways. There is no requirement to keep a councilmember in their district. If that happens, they serve to the end of their term, but must run again in the new district at that time.
Mostly, it is a numbers game, how many people in each district.
Then, its about whether you split up large cities like Tacoma and spread out their influence.
Also, the districts are supposed to be reasonably contiguous, with fairly straight lines.
