Happy Anniversary!
It was May 10, 2024 at 6 a.m. when members of the Parkland Community met with Radio Host Felix Banel to announce that a contact with Pacific Lutheran University had been signed the night before, and the 1908 Parkland School building now belonged to the community!
May of 2022, the community said NO when they heard the Parkland School was going to be torn down. They turned out in force at the Landmarks Commission meeting to stop the delisting of the historic building.
The donned red shirts, banners and signs and picketed on street corners. They started raising capital and contacting government officials at all levels.
And because of that, this 1908 building is now alive again—serving kids, families, and community groups every single week as Parkland Community Center.
But here’s the reality: Saving it was step one. Sustaining it is the real challenge. There is still over $2 million to pay down on the contract and ongoing costs to keep the doors open and programs running. This building isn’t about preserving the past— it’s about serving the future.
If this place matters to you, now’s the time to step in. Every dollar directly supports programs, repairs, and long-term stability.
