Help save a Nisqually species

Once again, as we do each year at this time, we write to ask your support for our work protecting and restoring our beautiful Nisqually Watershed.

But this year, we’re asking you to celebrate the 25th anniversary of your Nisqually Land Trust by making a donation that can help save a species – one that otherwise might not be here much longer.

Nisqually steelhead trout are a noble species. They’re actually a salmon species, and they swim farther, climb higher, and elude more lethal obstacles than any other salmon in Puget Sound.

Forty years ago, up to 8,500 of our steelhead returned home every year to spawn, and the Nisqually was considered one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier steelhead watersheds. But today, according to the best science available, our average spawning runs are down to just 400 fish.

The work that you, the Land Trust, and our many partners have done to protect their freshwater habitat over the past 25 years is probably the main reason we still have Nisqually steelhead at all. And as determined as they are to return to their home waters to spawn, we are just as determined to make sure that there will always be a home for them to return to.

Together, we can save our Nisqually steelhead. Like steelhead, we have to be smart, bold, strong and fast. We have to think bigger and work harder than ever before. But if these past 25 years prove anything, it’s that, together, we can do it.

Your past support has helped make your Nisqually Land Trust a vibrant, nationally accredited organization, one recognized statewide as a leader in innovative, cooperative, voluntary conservation. With your help, we have:

* Permanently protected nearly 5,000 acres of high-quality wildlife habitat, mainly through fee ownership, which provides for the highest level of conservation.

* Built a comprehensive stewardship program dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the ecological health of those lands and the species that depend on them.

* Developed a robust volunteer program that gets hundreds of students and adults out on our properties every year to practice hands-on conservation

Your investment today of $100, $250, $500 or more stands to leverage millions of dollars for collaborative land conservation, helps engage hundreds of volunteers of all ages in stewardship of our protected areas, connects habitat for wildlife resiliency in the face of climate change, and preserves our iconic scenic vistas.

Thank you for showing your support today by donating securely online at nisquallylandtrust.org or calling in your donation to 360-489-3400. From source to sea, your Nisqually Land Trust is working hard to protect, restore, and steward our precious watershed. You are central to our work.

With warm regards,

Joe Kane and JW Foster
