This week we are seeking volunteers to help us restore the Bresemann Forest along Spanaway Creek, invite you to the 2nd Chambers-Clover Watershed Festival, October 10, and have an update from our first court date defending Sequalitchew Creek.

Bresemann Work Parties September 24 & 26

Join CCRA leaders this Friday and Saturday at Bresemann Forest along Spanaway Creek to remove invasive ivy that threatens the forest canopy. Tools and guidance will be provided. Work parties will be held in from 5-7pm September 24 & 26, meeting at the Sprinker parking lot near the entrance to the forest.

2026 Chambers Clover Watershed Festival

We are returning again with the 2nd annual Chambers-Clover Watershed Festival! Mark your calendars for October 10th, 12-4pm and join us at the Flett Creek Outdoor Research Park directly across from Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood. We are building a culture of appreciation and stewardship of our watershed and would love to see you all there! Learn more here

Our First Day in Court

August 21st was our first day in court against the gravel mine seeking to destroy 188 acres of forest and drain the Vashon Aquifer immediately adjacent to Sequalitchew Creek in Dupont.

Weyrhauser, Glacier Northwest, and the City of Dupont filed a motion with the judge to dismiss our case, claiming that CCRA, Chris Barnes, and Hannah Thornton lacked the legal standing to appeal the hearing examiner’s decision. We knew this was bogus, but corporations with nearly unlimited resources can afford to make manuevers like this. The judge threw out the motion to dismiss! This means the case will now be heard on its merits.

In spite of this, the judge denied our attorney’s request to make Glacier Northwest and Weyrhauser pay our defense fees. This means we will now need to raise an additional $5200. The good news is that we’ve nearly reached our initial goal of $16,000 with over $14,000 raised, but the challenge will be to raise the rest. The judge will set the court schedule for the remainder of the year, and we will update you all once we have the dates.

CalPortland proposes an apparently unprecedented operation in Washington: intentionally lowering an aquifer to mine the saturated gravel beneath it. The aquifer feeds the wetlands and groundwater that sustain Sequalitchew Creek and its lush ravine ecosystem.

The mine expansion would also clear roughly 180 acres of forest and eliminate one of DuPont’s last large undeveloped green spaces.
