WordPress greed and site destruction

Apologies, if you go out to an older post and the photos are missing.

WordPress sent out a warning about the amount of space our 14 years of data was using. They demanded $50 monthly to add storage. The PPP doesn’t have that kind of support, so I tried deleting a few older photos.

Suddenly, NONE of the photos were appearing on any posts. And, support tells me they can’t fix it, because my site doesn’t have a high enough level $ subscription to warrant them having available backups.

Money, money, money. … disgusted with them right now. Please bear with us as we attempt to fix something here.

The posts since August 2, 2026 work. Their agent removed a plug-in rom Google, and that restored photos before November 2023. Yet, there is still a gap. They said they would continue to research it. They said the same thing last week and I had to get back in touch this week and start over.

(Excuse me while I cry. Losing several years of work is inexcusable.)

UPDATE: received from WordPress Support…

Hello there,

This isn’t something you did. On August 7, your site moved to the hosting platform we use for sites running custom plugins and themes. During that move, the media files copy across in a separate step from the rest of your content. That file copy stopped partway through, dated November 8, 2023, so everything uploaded from that point onward through 2025 didn’t make it onto the new server. Your Media Library still lists the file names because those records came across intact, but the actual image files behind them didn’t, which is why they show as missing when opened.

The photos you removed from 2015 are separate from this and unrelated to the larger gap you’re seeing.

I’m escalating this to our platform team so they can look at whether the original files are still available on the earlier side of that move and can be brought back over. I want to be careful not to promise a specific outcome before they’ve had a chance to investigate, but I’ll share exactly what they find as soon as I hear back.

You don’t need to take any action on your end for now, and I’ll keep this moving and update you at each step.

Let me know if you have any questions or need further assistance.

Kind Regards,

Maria
