Saturday, May 10 the Scandinavian Cultural Center at Pacific Lutheran University will be holding a 25th Year Jubilee at their Annual Spring Banquet. At 5:30 p.m. festivities will being with some socializing time followed by a 6 p.m. dinner and entertainment.
Saturday, the 17th of May is Norwegian Constitution Day. There will be a Flag Raising in Red Square at PLU at 8:30 a.m. And an invitation only President’s breakfast in the morning. Meanwhile up in Ballard, the annual Norwegian Constitution Day Parade will begin at 6 p.m. It follows a noon luncheon, entertainment in Bergen Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m and afterward, a dance at the Elks of Shilshole from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Norwegian Constitution Day, among Norwegians, syttende mai (meaning May Seventeenth), celebrates the Constitution of Norway. It was signed at Eidsvoll on May 17 in the year 1814. The constitution declared Norway to be an independent kingdom to avoid being ceded to Sweden after Denmark-Norway’s defeat in the Napoleonic wars.
