Section of Golden Given Road East to close Sept. 15-19 while new culvert is installed

PIERCE COUNTY, WA — Golden Given Road East between 112th Street East and 121st Street East in Parkland will be closed Sept. 15-19 while crews install a new, larger culvert to help reduce neighborhood flooding and improve fish passage. Access for residents and traffic detour routes will be provided.

The new box culvert will be installed under Golden Given Road East and 116th Street East. In addition to the culvert, crews will change the alignment of North Fork Clover Creek by removing several sharp turns that cause water to back up onto Golden Given Road East. Crews will also build a new stream channel on county property that ties into the creek. Construction on the new stream channel began on Sept. 4 and will take approximately five weeks.

“This project addresses a persistent flooding problem,” said Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy. “Thanks to funding from the Flood Control Zone District, we’ll be able to dramatically reduce the frequency and severity of flooding in this area.”

The Pierce County Flood Control Zone District’s Opportunity Fund provides $375,000 for construction. The contractor is Hoffman Construction.

“The Flood Control Zone District will fund projects that reduce flooding throughout the county,” said Councilmember Joyce McDonald, who represents the 2nd Council District and chairs the FCZD’s Board of Supervisors as well as its Executive Committee. “This project is one of many local projects – in cities and in the county – that will keep our neighborhoods safe.”
