KMS 6th graders raise and contribute $1,000 to Humane Society

FRANKLIN PIERCE SCHOOL DISTRICT —  Many schools throughout the region — including Keithley Middle School — often have programs that focus on students granting the wishes of other students through gift giving. But the 6th grade class of Keithley Middle School decided they’d like to focus their efforts beyond the school’s boundaries this year. As a class, the 6th graders decided to raise money and give it to a charity chosen by the class. Their decision was the result of conversations centered around what “Kolt PRIDE” meant to them. “PRIDE” is an acronym that stands for Perseverence, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Excellence. Specifically, conversations about respect and integrity led the 6th grade class to commit to fundraising for charity.HumaneSoc KMS

Deciding on a charity wasn’t the easiest process, but students were able to come to a decision with the help of Keithley’s 6th grade teachers. The 6th grade class was presented with background information on four prominent local charities. From those four, the class chose the Humane Society.

The $1,000 wasn’t the easiest fundraising task, either. Students conducted a number activites, including the sale of over 2,000 candybars to raise the funds.

On Monday, December 16, Principal Tom Edwards and three 6th grade students — Ariano Taitague Chavez, Aaliyah Rosario, and Dajae Kitchen — traveled to the Humane Society to present the $1,000 donation. Principal Tom Edwards was touched by the project. “I just love the fact that, during Winter Wishes week, when most of our students are having their own wishes granted, our 6th grade class chose to grant a large wish to a deserving organization that is important in our community. I’m extremely proud of our 6th graders’ PRIDE!,” said Edwards.

According to KMS teacher Tracy Fort, there are plans underway to conduct a similar project next year.
